Mr. Nakamura Jun, Co-Chair of the “Fukuichi Area Environmental Radiation Monitoring Project”, has been monitoring radiation levels in Fukushima for seven years, since feeling that “the government and TEPCO were not being honest with the measurements.” However, he states that “as for the soil [radiation dose], it doesn’t seem to have gone down very much.”
Mr. Nakamura also shares his concerns about the planned Tokyo Olympics, being referred to as the “Recovery Olympics.” He says, “By successfully completing the torch relay, the Japanese government is trying to give the impression that the disaster at Fukushima is over. I want to make it clear that this is a terrible mistake.”
Even now, despite high radiation levels, Iitate Village is host to a variety of complicated problems, such as the construction of a new certified kindergarten and sports facilities in efforts to encourage young people to the area. Mr. Ito continues to observe these issues up close.
